Oustanding and worth a special trip is the way Mobil Travel Guide describes Merlino's Belvedere. The Belvedere won the Four-Star Award three years in a row from the nationally recognized vacation guidebook. This coveted award is granted to only about 400 restaurants out of the more than 20,000 rated each year. It is for superior quality and excellence.

The Belvedere was started in 1946 by Joe and Tony Merlino in what is now the main room and bar. It has undergone several major expansions in the 40 years the Merlino's have dedicated their lives to serving good food and drink at a price the whole family can enjoy. The Belvedere presently consists of the main room and bar, the Mediterranean Room, the Grotta Sotterranea and the Roman Room. In addition to these beautifully decorated rooms there is a large banquet room upstairs which seats 200 for special occasions. The complete menu is available in all but the Grotta which serves as the main cocktail lounge.

The menu has something for everyone, from the homemade Italian dishes to the complete selection of steaks. There is a large seafood selection and sandwiches for those who don't want a whole meal. The Pallandill and Bean Soup are our own recipe as is the sausage used in some of the Italian dishes. The ravioli, lasagne, spaghetti, cavatelli, manicotti, and meatballs are all made by Merlino's staff from the same recipes used by Tony and Joe when they did all the cooking. In August of 1981, Joe Merlino retired. Tony's son, Michael, became co-owner with Tony. They expanded the menu to include lasagne and chicken cacciatore, and worked together to continue the family tradition of original recipes.

With Tony's passing in September of 1986, Michael, and his wife Cathie, and their children, Adam and Michelle, took over sole operation of the restaurant. Mike still oversees every phase of the operation and does some of the cooking.

On January 14, 1992, the entire interior of the Belvedere was destroyed by fire. The Belvedere was rebuilt in three phases that took six months for completion. Special attention was given to re-establishing the traditional Italian dining atmosphere and the food recipes were retained exactly as prior to the fire. Restrooms were enlarged and handicapped access was given special attention.

Our steaks are aged and cut in our butcher shop and prepared just right. It is no accident that our steaks are cooked to perfection; and you are assured of getting the same fine quality every time. Merlino's feeds over 3,000 people a week in the largest restaurant in the area.

This all points to the reason Mobil selected the Belvedere for their Four-Star Award three years in a row. There just isn't a finer place to enjoy food and drink in a pleasant atmosphere in the country.
